Public knows plenty

President Obama has launched yet another national campaign for his health care overhaul, beginning with a speech he gave on Monday in the Philadelphia area.

Of course, Obama has already delivered 35 speeches on health care as president, and yet public support for his proposal declines. Perhaps this is because, contrary to his perception, voters are actually coming to understand what’s in the bills.

They would require individuals to buy health insurance — a mandate Obama opposed during his campaign because it would drive up the cost of coverage. The bills propose cutting $493 billion from Medicare. They would provide $1 trillion in subsidies to insurance companies over the next 10 years.

The uninsured, including many low- to moderate-income Americans, would pay a tax of up to 2.5 percent of income; high-income earners could be taxed; businesses that don’t provide coverage would pay a tax (probably coming out of wages); and certain health care benefits would be taxed
